WHOOMP There IT Is! #30 – It’s Been A While

Long time, no see. I’ve missed you. I honestly can’t believe it’s been almost a month. When I decided to start doing my WHOOMP There IT Is! linky party 1x/mo (first Fridays), I didn’t intend to only blog 1x/mo!  But that’s about where I am. I do plan to blog at least twice a month though.

The month flew by and even though I had a few finishes, I don’t feel like I’ve accomplished much. Maybe because the last couple of quilts were very simple patterns? Who knows. Truth be told, I’ve been in some kind of mood lately and I really hope it passes soon because I don’t like feeling this way.

I finished the commission for 2 baby quilts. A friend/coworker ordered a quilt for each of her grandsons who will both be turning a year old in August. She got the quilts on Tuesday and is very pleased and excited to present them in August.

And here’s my other finish.

When I get to the end of a piece of fabric, 7″ or less, I usually strip it down into strings ranging from 2.5″ – 1″.  Well one day, a long, long time ago, I got a wild hair and decided to sew all my 1″ strings together (in jellyroll race fashion) and this is what it yielded. Too thin to be a lap quilt, and too wide to be a table runner, I’m calling it a bed runner. It sat as a flimsy until last month when #4 was chosen in our UFO Challenge 2016, and now it’s finished!

One last thing I want to share before the party is a pattern test I’m working on. It’s a pattern called Scrappy Litter Blox by Lillyella. The pattern will be included in the June Stash Builder Box.  I usually like to get all the cutting out of the way first, but not this time. I had to put at least one block together to show you.

I’ve quite a bit more cutting to do but the block goes together rather quickly.  I’ll finish cutting tonight and hopefully get most of the quilt together this weekend. And speaking of this weekend, it’s supposed to get upwards of 117° here in Phoenix! So yeah, I’ll be indoors ALL weekend stitchin’!

Eeek! It’s going to be a long summer. =( Maybe I can come visit one of you this summer. Anywhere is cooler than here!

Blogging vs Sewing

When I started this blog I planned on posting once a week but I haven’t been living up to it.  Blogging isn’t easy and it takes a lot of time. Writing, editing, editing/posting pics, links, labels, hashtags, sharing…aghhh!! When I get home from work it’s shall I sew or shall I blog? It’s not always an easy decision but sewing usually  wins. Blogging is great though and I’m excited to say I made a new friend! Meet +Greta Anderson from Material Detachment. A marvelous seamstress/quilter and a remarkable writer. I had the pleasure of talking w/ her on the phone yesterday. She’s an admirable person w/a huge heart for kids and humanity! Make sure to stop by her blog.

As you can see, I’ve made quite a bit of progress on the Kaleido-Hex quilt, officially known as a One Block Wonder (I’ll be referring to it as 1BW going forward). It still isn’t the only thing I’ve been working on (see distractions below:  origami bag and applique).  Once I have all of strips sewn together it will measure approx 56 x 90.  I’m planning this for a king size bed so the side borders will have to be substantial.  I picked out border fabric yesterday. What do you think?

1st Audition

This coming Saturday I’ll be heading out for a week long quilting retreat to Colorado w/a couple of friends. I’m so excited! I’m also very ambitious and will be taking at least 4 projects to work on, one of which will be the 1st quilt I’m getting paid $$ to make (A Rag Quilt). I’ll also be taking the 1BW, the applique wall hanging and a Quilts w/o Corners quilt that I’m turning into a tree skirt.

For the Rag quilt I bought some charm packs, but I have the backing and fleece already cut.

I whipped up another cute Origami bag over the weekend for a friend’s birthday.

The wall hanging is ready to be appliqued which I plan on doing while I’m in Colorado.

This is the Quilts w/o Corners quilt that will become a tree skirt. You can’t really tell from this pic…or maybe you can…but the edge of this quilt is all jacked up. I’m going to cut a slit in it, cut the middle circle out AND attempt to add a ruffle of Christmas fabric to the edge.

200+ Squares in 2 minutes

Nothing makes one feel more terrifically accomplished than finishing a quilt.  With that being said, I try to finish as many quilts as possible, as quickly as possible. But if you’re a quilter, you know it takes time…sometimes a lot of it, depending on how complicated the pattern.  In quilting, as it is w/other things in life, (no examples come to mind at the moment) after doing it for a while, you start looking for faster, more efficient ways of doing things. Hence, this blog post.

Every month at QA we have a “sew and tell”.  One night a sister quilter brought in a bag she’d made. It was love at first sight! I immediately ordered the pattern from a local quilt shop, In Stitches.

I finally got around to looking at the pattern last night and saw that it called for 208, 2.5″ squares. That’s a lot of squares! And if you’re not a quilter or just maybe new to quilting, it seems like it would take forever to cut 208 squares, but it doesn’t have to! I knew I could do it in about 2 mins and here’s how.

First I dug out 13 -2.5″ x 40″ strips from my 2.5″ strip drawer. I knew this would come in handy!

Next, I layered 2 strips on top of each other then aligned several rows on cutting mat. Each 40″ strip is folded in half and layered on top of another.

I then cut off the selvage and commenced to cutting 2.5″ sections (each cut yields 4 squares per row) and…

Voilà!

This method works well for rectangles too!
