Road Trippin’ and Hand Stitchin’

Road trippin’ and hand stitchin’ are great companions!

I’ve always preferred to be passenger on road trips. Even more so now that I’m into hand stitching.

I made excellent use of the ride time to San Diego this weekend and completed the hand quilting on this pillow cover, a leftover block from my Arkansas Traveler quilt.

Can you see the red stitches in the diamonds? I love the texture. It reminds me of fluffy popcorn. I see a finished pillow cover in the near future.

Here are some pics from the trip. Next time I’d like to go sailing.

We toured the historic Old Point Loma Lighthouse and museum and I just realized I didn’t get any pics of the outside of the structure. BUT, I did get pics of these fascinating lights!

And I knew there’d be quilts inside.

Everything was behind plexiglass to be sure nothing was touched, as the lighthouse tour was a self-guided one.

We also went whale watching. You can see those pics on my Instagram.

Until next time, happy stitchin’ and God bless.

A Bit-O-Handwork

I’ve got a UFO to get out of the closet/onto the design wall AND a quilt to square up and prepare for binding, but first a bit-o-handwork!

Any time I sit on the couch Moe thinks it’s time to sit on my lap. He is a lap dog after all.

This is the project. It’s an Arkansas Traveler block. It will be a pillow cover to match a lap quilt that is ready for quilting (not hand quilting) and in my queue.

This handwork business is new to me so I’m not sure what type of thread I really should be using or if/when to double strand it. I’m pretty sure it all depends on the look/feel I’m going for, but any tips/pointers you can offer are appreciated.

These are the threads I’m using.

I got this contraption from the “freebie” table at our chapter meeting last month. I love freebies! I’m hoping someone can explain how I’m supposed to use it for handwork.

Thanks for stopping by.

A New Fondness

Some people, or at the very least my sister, might call this an obsession, but “fondness” is what I’m calling it.

I’ve a new fondness for hand quilting!

I pulled another UFO (un-finished object) out of my WIP (works in progress) closet.

This is the start of an Arkansas Traveler quilt.

I struggled to add the borders to these diamonds using a tutorial and decided to use a paper piecing template going forward.  So this block will be a pillow cover. A hand quilted pillow cover.

I started work on it this weekend during a trip to IA to visit my quilter/blogger friend, Greta of Material Detachment.  She cut the diamonds for me not quite 3 years ago.

I made lots of progress and am completely pleased w/how it’s s turning out!

I wasn’t planning on doing this much quilting but all this fabulous texture has changed my mind!

I’ll be adding more quilting to the diamonds using a red thread.

Not so long ago I labled those who hand quilted as “crazy”. But now I see what all the hype is about!

I want to hand quilt ALL the things!

Okay, I’m starting to sound obsessed so I’ll leave it at that.

Thanks for visiting.

Peace so unexplainable, I can hardly think
