‘Tis the Season…

to overeat, overspend, etc. I cannot say “no” to any goody that is in the immediate vicinity. If I can see it, I’m going to eat it.  This is not a healthy way to be.  Combine the stress of training new staff at work with the usual holiday stress, no time for the gym AND a nonstop barrage of cookies, cakes, donuts, potlucks, parties etc. and what do you get? A BIG big ole muffin top! I feel…and look like a busted can of biscuits!

The boss says we get to wear jeans for the rest of the year (we usually only get to on Friday) and I’m ashamed to say that only 1 of 15 pair fit me! So today I went to the 50% off sale at Goodwill and bought some bigger jeans to wear for the rest of the year.    Now before you judge me, please understand this is only a temporary solution. I will not buy anymore clothes to accommodate my fluffier, busted figure.  Come the new year…there will definitely be changes.  I don’t usually make resolutions but I am going to have already for 2014.  I simply cannot go on like this. I understand sacrifices will have to be made,  and because I’m so uncomfortable the way I am, I am willing to make them!

Here are my resolutions.
  • Get back on a regular workout schedule. I’ve been slipping for a few months now.
  • Go to bed earlier. I definitely need more rest, especially if I have to be at the gym for that 515a class.
  • Incorporate better eating habits; less sugar, more veggies. I’m shooting for 6 small meals/day.
  • Spend quality time in God’s word. I read the bible regularly but I’m usually rushing it.
  • And last but not least…Stop spending money! I mostly spend $ on fabric, so the biggest challenge I’m taking is to NOT purchase any fabric, 2nd hand or otherwise, for 6 mos (Jan 1-June 30).

Please pray for me. I need it and appreciate it!

This is How I Sew

Meet Betty, also known as Ugly Betty or Back-burner Betty. She’s a Baby Lock 1506 Denim Buster and the first machine I’d ever owned. I bought her for $40 on Craigslist about a year and a half ago. I’m not sure how old she is but I do know she wasn’t nearly as smooth as the borrowed one I was using before her.

Shortly after I got her, I decided to buy the borrowed one from my friend. This is Wilma. She is my work horse! She’s a Baby Lock Quilters Choice Professional.

Wilma

She came w/this quilt frame (expands to King Size) and I paid a mere $400. I have awesome friends!

A couple months ago, something happened to Wilma and she was out of commission. This left me no choice but to get intimate w/Betty. I used her until I could afford to get Wilma up & running again. After a new foot pedal and spool pin ordered from My Sewing Machine Parts, Betty wasn’t as bad as I once thought. We spent many hours together and she made me proud. =)

Thrifty Quilter

So, some people might say I’m cheap, I prefer the word “thrifty”.  When I started quilting 2 yrs ago, I really had no idea just how expensive this hobby ( I prefer the word “passion”) would be. I’ve even saved all of my receipts, with the intention of adding them up one day. But do I really want to know how many hundreds or thousands of dollars I’ve spent? No, I don’t!  So I haven’t brought myself to add these babies up…but I still collect them.

One day my friend invites me to Goodwill,  where she had recently found some fabric for quilting. Now, I like 2nd hand shopping and I had frequented Savers but I never thought about looking for fabric there. I have to admit, initially, in my head, I kinda turned my nose up at the idea. I mean, I could buy clothes for me and my family there, maybe some knickknacks for my home, but quilting fabric?! I didn’t really like the idea initially. Fast forward 6 months or so and the majority of my stash is compiled of  fabric from Goodwill!!! Every other Saturday they offer 50% off just about everything in the store. We make it a point to hit 2 or 3 stores each time we go.

The growing stash
Here’s what I got this past weekend at Goodwill for under $20!!

Also, Joann had a 60% off coupon this week. I had 5 coupons (1 from my Joann mailer, 1 from Joann text message, 1 from preferred customer email and 2 from my friend) and bought these beauties and fleece.
