WHOOMP There IT Is! #29 – Change

Hi Y’all! I hope today finds you in good spirits and feeling inspired, if not productive.

When I first introduced WHOOMP There IT Is!I said I’d re-evaluate after 3 mos of hosting to decide if I’d continue w/the weekly linky party.  It’s quite the commitment and I wasn’t sure I was up for it.  Three months came and went in January and “re-evaluating” the linky party wasn’t a part of it.  However, I have been thinking about it quite a bit lately and I’ve come to a decision.   The party will go on, but it’s changing from a weekly party to a monthly party.  The new party day will be the 1st Friday of every month.  So, welcome to my first monthly, WHOOMP There IT Is! linky party!

Moving right along…

I haven’t been super productive lately, but I did manage to finish the tops of the commission quilts I’m working on; an alternating 4-patch and a disappearing 9-patch.

In other unproductive news…

The number chosen for April in the UFO Challenge 2016 was #3.  My #3 project is this 12″ square paper-pieced rooster block.  I didn’t work on it at all during the month but I was planning to get it done for show & tell at our monthly QA meeting. No problem, it’s one 12″ square! So yesterday afternoon, 3 1/2 hrs before the meeting, I finally started.  I cut out all the paper pieces and got my fabrics in order and then I hit a wall.  I totally forgot how to start!  After finishing Gossamer, I thought for sure paper-piecing was ingrained in my brain for life, but I was wrong and I had nothing for show and tell. I guess paper piecing is a “use it or lose it” thing for me.  I’m very thankful Sue is giving me a refresher course next week.

Rooster

This month’s Challenge # is 4.  My # 4 project is this small flimsy made w/1″ strings sewn together in Jelly Roll Race fashion.  It will become a bed runner or lap quilt for a friend and I will not wait until the last minute to get started on it!

Other happenings…

I ordered these adorable wooden buttons and tags from All This Wood on Etsy.  They have fantastic customer service, super fast shipping and quality workmanship. ‘Twas a great experience!

I’m super excited about winning this amazing 1/2yd bundle (middle stack) of Alison Glass’s Sun Print collection on the Fat Quarter Shop’s Instagram giveaway last week. Yay me!  If you like giveaways, Instagram is the place to be!

And one more thing before the linky…

I’m the only one in my immediate family who never needed glasses.  Though I’ve always been proud of my 20/20 vision, I have worn glasses purely as an accessory because I like the way I look in them. And it’s a good thing too, because thanks to presbyopia, I now need to wear them for reading and working on the computer. Today I came to grips w/this old age eye crap and bought my first pair of readers. Now I just have to remember to take them off when I’m not reading or working.

Okay, that’s enough about me.  Pray tell what’s been going on in your neck of the woods.

Happy Mothers Day to ALL you beautiful women!

WHOOMP There IT Is! #24 – Award Winner

WHOOMP There IT Is!  Gossamer got Honorable Mention in the pictorial category at the Arizona Quilters Guild Quilt Show 2016!

Not too bad for my first ever show entry! Thank you Janeen for the wonderful pattern! AND thank you Sue for your thorough and patient instruction!  You can read about the making of Gossamer here.  Needless to say, I’m ecstatic!

Ugh! I could not get this centered!

And in other news…

Last week’s craft sale was pretty much a bust. There wasn’t much traffic at all.  I sold 3 bibs all day. We were out there from 8a – 1p.  I came home and listed everything in My Etsy Shop.

Besides the bibs, I’d made several belly bands for small dogs. I decided to give my bands a name; Mr. PeePotty.  I’ve always heard that baby and dog items sell the best. I sure hope it’s true!

I did manage to get another spiderweb block finished. I’m starting to see webs form!

I had a minor mishap though. On one section I cut off the web strings instead of my guide.  It was an easy fix, but I did want to cry when it happened.

There are several patterns/tutorials for the spiderweb quilt.   I chose to go w/ this tutorial because I found it the simplest.  The blocks measure 11.5″, so I figure to have a decent size lap quilt I need 42 blocks (6 across, 7 down), which means my 1st block will definitely be in this quilt!

This scrappy Jelly Roll Race quilt is basted and I’m hoping to finish it this weekend to get it sent off on Monday. Then I’ll get started on my next commission for 2 baby quilts w/custom labels.

And lastly, for the past few years I’ve volunteered at the AQG Quilt Show. If I’ve had a name tag, it’s been a sticker but this year I have a real badge! Thanks Sue!

If you are local or just visiting this weekend, come see the 300+ quilts made by amazing Arizona quilters!  I hope I see you there!

And one more pic of  me & Gossamer for good measure. =)

Now it’s your turn to show us what you’ve been up to.

WHOOMP There IT Is! #21 – And the Winner Is…

Thank you all for participating in the giveaway! I enjoyed reading what quilt blocks you’d like to see made into earrings.  I promise I read them all, even if I haven’t replied yet.  And, I will definitely pass your suggestions on to Sandra. If you have not already done so, be sure to check out all of her fabulous jewelry creations at Fay West Designs.

Now, the moment you all have been wating for:

Congratulations GayLee!  You are # 8 and the lucky winner!  Please email me your address asap.  I’d like to get your prize mailed out on Monday.

Next order of business is about the 2016 UFO Challenge I’m participating in.   March’s number is 6.  My #6 project is a Spiderweb quilt. I was inspired to make one after seeing Julie’s gorgeous creation pictured below.  Something tells me that I’m going to end up w/more UFOs than I started with!

I’ve got a good list of  things to do this month.  Besides work on the Spiderweb quilt, I’ve got to make a gift quilt, several small items for a craft sale taking place in 2 weeks, sew a sleeve and label on Gossamer for the Arizona Quilters Guild Quilt Show, finish 2 test projects for Kids Camp, AND start a commission for 2 baby quilts! Pray for me y’all!

Now it’s party time!

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.Phil 3:12-14 NIV

WHOOMP There IT Is! #3

I recently ran out of batting so I’ve spent the last week or so working on small projects.
It all started w/this snap bag.
Then I made a couple of zippered pouches. An open wide zippered pouch and a boxy bag.  I’ve only sewn zippers twice before so I was pretty proud of myself for getting the zippers right the 1st time on both of these bags.

I decided to use up some of my flannel stash and made a few baby blankets. I forgot to take pics of a couple of them.  I went retro w/the first one.  This Sylvester and Tweety fabric is from 1997!

There’s another baby blanket rolled up in this next pic. The tote bags are a pattern I’m working on for my pattern store. I also made a set of Easy Reversible Microwave Cozies.

Then I remembered my granddaughter’s 5th b-day is coming up next month, so I thought it would be a good idea to actually start the wall hanging that was to be her gift last year! In my defense I actually had ALL of the pieces cut out…but then I put them in a ziploc bag and tucked them safely away…and kinda forgot about them for a year.  Anyway, it only took me a couple of hours to get it sewn together.

It’s the Tiny Tulips pattern by Jera at Quilting in the Rain.

The tulips are made w/fabric I actually won from one of Jera’s Instagram giveaways awhile back.
Yay Me!

It’s still in the flimsy stage because I want to get her name embroidered on it before I quilt it.  Where you see “Mia” in black is where I want to get it embroidered in pink.

And of course I plan to finish it using the Faux Piped Binding technique.

Now it’s that time
What’s been going on in your neck ‘o the woods? I sure would like to hear about it!  Link up to my new WHOOMP There IT Is! Saturday Linky Party below.

Another Flimsy, Another Finish, Etc.

I finished another flimsy. This one is modern.  Some of you might be thinking I’m just a flimsy maker, but I’m not. I do finish quilts. I’m just taking a short break from the actual quilting part to make tops.  I’m working on building up inventory for my Etsy shop.  I’d like to take it off “vacation status” by mid October and have at least 20 items to list. I’m also waiting on modifications on the DIY sewing table in order to quilt more comfortably.
I made me another bag.  It’s a LARGE quilt carry bag that stretches to over 45″ when full of quilts.   It’s a quilt as you go pattern from the book Jelly Roll Quilts by Pam and Nicky Lintott of  The Quilt Room.  I used fabric from the Laurel Burch Jungle Songs collection.  The pattern called for magnetic snaps but me being “Ms. Thrifty”, decided to go w/the cheaper option of sew-on snaps.   Needless to say, if I make it again, I’ll use the magnetic snaps. I’d also put some batting in the strap and make it longer.
I added faux buttons to the outside of the bag too.

This is Penelope. A back-up/traveler/loaner I bought for $25 from a coworker whose Aunt (owner) had recently passed away. She runs beautifully.

And this is Oh Suzanna!  I got her for $25 too from the same coworker.  I had no idea how awesome sergers are! I’m happy to add her to my collection.
Connecting Threads had their Essential Cotton Thread on sale for $1.95/spool. So I bought a few spools.

I pulled the old Black and Decker stand-by out of the closet.  I finally got fed up dealing w/my constantly dripping Rowenta Effective. I cannot for the life of me remember why I put this baby in the closet in the first place. It doesn’t drip and it gives me a little warning beep when it’s getting ready to shut-off.  I hope to use it until I can get the Panasonic Cordless 360 , which has been on my wish list for quite some time.

I won these adorable magnetic needle minders from a giveaway that Lara B. of Buzzin Bumble had a few weeks ago.  They are from an Etsy shop called YumYumButtons.

My new pen! It’s cigar style (fat) and made of Bubinga.

And lastly, I visited Quilt n’ Sew Connection in Prescott Valley and practiced a little woodgrain fmq on an awesome, if very expensive machine.  The Bernina Q20 which is a sit-down longarm. Yes! It is now on my wishlist too!

Until next time, Happy Quilting and God Bless!
