Here are my last finishes of the year. This small lap quilt is a free-form block project inspired by the book Cultural Fusion Quilts by Sujata Shah. It’s a kind of a stack and whack, but instead of whacking, you slide your ruler in the direction of your cut to make gentle curves. I had previously tried to sew curves by pinning my pieces together but it was an epic fail. Before starting this quilt, I watched a few videos for sewing curves and found a winner in this video by Sew Kind of Wonderful. Now I can sew curves w/o pinning!

I did organic wavy line quilting, which perfectly completes this organic creation.

I put the extra blocks on the back of the quilt.

This is another book pattern called Fall Frolic from the book 40 Fabulous Quick-Cut Quilts by Evelyn Sloppy. It is made primarily with Thimbleberries fabrics which I think are fabulous for a Fall quilt.

The quilting motif is called Filament which I found in the book Step-by-Step Free-Motion Quilting by Christina Cameli.

And this backing from my stash complements it well.

And last but not least, Urban Grid, in it’s washed and crinkly glory. This was part of Angela Walters’ 3rd Annual Build A Quilt. Basically a block of the month sampler quilt. It was my first time participating in something like this and I quite enjoyed it. I most definitely love the boldness of these fabrics and the asymmetry of this layout.

I quilted this one with a different type of organic wavy lines.

This is the runner I made for my dresser. I did machine quilting (basically stitch in the ditch) as well as hand quilting. Though I may add more hand quilting in the future, there’s enough to call her done for now.

So that’s it for my 2020 finishes, but of course I already have a couple of more projects started. The first being the next BAQ, which is the 4th Annual Build A Quilt. This time around I chose the lowest volume fabric option. It’s called Stay Wild. All fabric and block patterns are designed by Angela Walters. She’s doing it a little differently this year and has not yet revealed the 3 different layout options, but here is what the Stay Wild collection consists of and the 10 block patterns.

We’re already two blocks in, it always starts in November. I decided to add this marigold accent which I think looks fantastic.

And… I’ll ring in the new year with my first ever Bow Tie Quilt. I plan to use 3.5″ squares and I wasn’t sure what size to cut the corner blocks that form the knot. I took a poll on IG using these sample blocks and most people think a larger knot looks best. From left to right I auditioned corner squares measuring 1.5″, 1.75″, and 2″.

These are the blocks I’ve made so far. All of these are made with 2″ corners, however, I plan to mix it up and make the knots varying sizes. Also this background fabric is a dark grey, not black as it appears. This is going to be a fairly small quilt, 48″ x 48″.

A Thread for Life

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
