In an attempt to keep the paper piecing technique fresh in my head, I plan to make at least one paper pieced block/month.
I already had a block in mind for this month but then I saw this IG post by @lillyellasworld that instantly changed my mind. A free pattern! And it’s so pretty!
Pretty much as soon as I walked in the door from work on Friday evening I started on the pattern.
I pulled fabrics from a stack that was sitting close at hand, grabbed the coloring sheet and haphazardly colored in flutter by two.
The coloring does not have to be perfect and besides, I needed to finish this block before I started getting sleepy.
Here’s my Friday finish.
I absolutely love my fabric choices, just not the order in which I used them. If I would’ve slowed my roll, and thought about it a little more, I would’ve made the body and antenna yellow to be a better contrast to the stunning background fabric. Even though the antenna is pretty much lost, I do love the block.
I decided I would make another block on Saturday. I didn’t think I had enough of that background fabric* to make one w/a lighter colored body, so I pulled some solids, which I did put more thought into (you cannot tell from my coloring though) and this is my Saturday make.
And then I decided to go for a trifecta. This one would be totally different than the other two; low volume neutrals! I never do low volume anything. And I didn’t even use a coloring sheet for this one! Here’s my Sunday finish.
I really like the look and movement that lined background fabrics lend to these blocks. I discovered this when I made Proud Mary. This will probably be my MO going forward, especially when I make patterns by Lillyella.
*As I started drafting this, I checked to see just how much of the background fabric I have left from that first block. It just may be enough for one more block! I’ll keep you posted!
Until next time, God bless and happy stitchin’!

Well done!! I love the background in the first block. I’m not a fan of paper piecing, but I do a few projects a year to try to maintain my skills. I’ll have to check this out.
This is such a fun project. You did a wonderful job with all 3. Thank you for suggesting I attempt this. This may be a good thing for me. You are an awesome teacher sis
Beautiful!! Your paper piecing skills look excellent. I find the first couple of paper piecing pieces a challenge until I get back into the groove or until after I cut off some needed fabric and have to restart and that makes me more careful and pay attention.
All are interesting and lovely. The first one is my favorite . The low volume one is equally pretty. I think you have such a great skill for choosing your background fabrics. Then when you add your color choices to it, and just works fantastic with your projects. That’s a good idea of one block a month. I like that idea.
Wonderful blocks!!
